Track Review: Electrelane - "Between the Wolf and the Dog"
Brighton's Electrelane have built up a solid reputation over the course of three albums and scattered singles, but I don't know anyone who's really psyched about them. More of a restrained, "Hmmm, yes, we all appreciate that soft edged Stereolab motorik thing, yes, very nice." This unscientific consensus might be short on time, as songs from the band's forthcoming Too Pure album, No Shouts, No Calls, sail way past respectable and deep into awesome.
Take the ever-changing monster, "Between the Wolf and the Dog," for example. Hi-hats and metallic soloing grab the balls immediately, but are only a wake up call for the kick pedal frenzy that quickly ensues. At around the 1:20 mark, the spastic axe chills out briefly in favor of an icier guitar line, then returns to choppily duet. The restraint of the one and energy of the other creates some lovely tension before the whole thing erupts into a full blown up-tempo rocker. Then, without warning, the nervous guitar dance falls away completely, leaving only heavenly female vocals floating over the drumbeat. The effect is sublime, a wash of Valium finally kicking in to soothe a worried mind. Oohs and ahhs continue to take the edge of off the re-grouping dementia for a while, with guitar spikes transposed to fuzzy synth. The depth of unease is too great to be placated for long though, and we go out on the metal solo horse who brought us.
In short: Electrelane - Time to get psyched!

I'd seen it listed as late April, but according to their official site ( http://www.electrelane.com ), it'll probably be early May before it comes out in the U.S.

I've been an Electrelane fan since Rock It To The Moon... they're an awesome band and I cannot recommend them highly enough!
