Track Review: David Kilgour "BBC World"

Though no longer forced to churn out pop classics on an ancient two or three track recorder as he did with his seminal eighties band the Clean, David Kilgour's songwriting hasn't changed too drastically. He's still recording solid tunes, with no discernable regard for passing fashions, and not a whiff of pretention. As a result, he's still probably destined to be treasured by a very select few, and left undiscovered by the oblivious majority. While it's completely unreasonable to expect the rambunctious youth of the Clean's earliest singles, "BBC World" from this year's The Far Now holds up well to that band's later work as well as Kilgour's prolific solo output. There's a gently chugging grace here that reminds me of a mid-career Kinks track. But it's mainly just nice to know the ol' Kiwi is still happily carrying on.
