Track review: Britney Spears "Today"

Britney SpearsAs someone who sincerely believes that even the densest of pop stars can create transcendent music if they surround themselves with the right people (see Britney's "Toxic," Justin Timberlake's solo career), I can say that I was honestly had a genuine interest in Spears' latest leak to Ryan Seacrest's radio show. Of course, that was before I actually heard the song, speculatively titled "Today," which turns out to be a total lump of dogshit.
The lyrics are the kind of hideous empowerment poetry that Spears posts on her website, a "you'll be sorry" slap at K-Fed. Musically it goes nowhere: no chorus, just a repeating melody line, and in the middle there's an absolutely hideous spoken bridge where Britney pretends to be on the phone with her "baby boy" and speaks with this gratingly hammy coo that rivals her acting job in Crossroads. In Britney's defense, this probably isn't going to be a single; it sounds like a demo leaked as a complete PR move, and let's hope for her it's trashed before her actual album is finalized. Thanks to Stereogum for the leak.

i completely agree, except for the incorrect assessment of Justin Timberlake's career

I heard the single and all I can say is, it's bad. She needs to leave the 'torch' songs for Christina to sing as well as the vocal runs. Britney's were sloppy, off pitch, and totally unprofessional. Her lyrics reminded me of something a love scorned teenager would write in her diary. She really needs to accept the fact that her "15 minutes of fame" are over and have been for a long time.

Some friends and I are still debating about what she's asking her "baby boy" for: my money's still on Doritos and teeth whitening products (for the chil'un, of course!).

not as bad as i was expecting. the music itself was terrible the vocals wernt that bad. heard that little bit where she was trying to be like christina aguilera-that was terrible. i hate pop -esp brit style pop but her voice isnt bad its just the childish way she uses it.

Yeah Oohbad... this sounds like a rejected Christina song. Britney doesn't have the chops to pull off this sort of material. And the material isn't particularly strong to begin with.At this point, Britney's only value to popular culture is that of a carnival side show. Nobody wants to hear her muddling through middle of the road R&B/pop. Her only chance here is to come out with an album of baroque, ultra-trashy, completely over the top psycho-pop. Get the word out to all the songwriters who service the teen and post-teen pop properties: We want the craziest shit you got. We want the songs that were too weird, too ridiculous for all the respectable acts.Could this tactic fail spectacularly? Sure. But, what's the alternative? If record labels think that people will buy a boring pop record by an artist just because that artist is in the midst of a rather entertaining personal breakdown, they will quickly find this is not the case.

The lyrics is more like a message she wants to delivered, especially if this is for K-fed - referring to the kind of man she married to, always partied or two-timing till late hours. By the way, Britney was popular, not only for her unique voice but for the dance performance + the innocent beauty she projected in most of her concerts and interviews. However, it will definitely add more value if she can further enhance her vocals, just the same way as she did with her body and dancing. A duet with someone with a higher vocals may enhance and add value to her comeback.

She is starting to have some strange vocal sounds- starting to remind me of Shakira a bit. Great music to slit your wrists to!

It's just a demo for peet sake. She's just testing the waters. No one else's demo would've received so much attention. Just goes to show you she truly is a pop cultural icon. She has it all.

At the VMA 2003, when Madonna sang only a portion of her song, it wasn't that fantastic either. The kiss with Britney overshadowed all that. As for Britney, every sadist all out to scrutinize and even overrule private life - like even call the SPCA for dog injury? stopping her car to videotape her, finding her whereabout? If those who love her voice, they will still love her song, demo or not.

OMG!!!IF THE DEMO MAKES ALL THE FANS AND ALL THE BRITNEY "HATERS" GO CRAAAZYY!!!IMAGINE HER NEW ALBUM!!!AND NOOOOO SHE IS NOT TRYING TO BE CHRISTINA AGUILERA LOL (SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST SO... DUMB!)!!!OH! AND HEY SUNSHINE...MAYBE THE "STRANGE VOCAL SOUNDS" MAKES A SINGER UNIQUE!!!

Well, I know this sounds weird but......Eventhough I never cared for Britney's music before (I have never purchased any of her albums), there is something soulful in this.....I actually liked it! Not the talking part though. Everyone trashes her - but I think she has a good voice, and there are parts where it seems she intentionally goes a little off key....which goes with the music box and the mood. Very interesting - I am actually curious to hear what else she has up her sleeve

Most everyone agrees that Brittney has wigged out so I agree with Joey Headset, Britney could do great with a psycho pop album.
