Beck recorded this cover version of Lee Hazlewood's 1970 lament last year in Nashville, but the country outsider's recent death was reason enough to post it now on his website. Beck's faithful rendition of this Cowboy in Sweden album track sits so close to his own Sea Change material stylistically that Hazlewood is revealed as a defining influence. Lee's recordings always had an intrinsic oddity to them, a far away quality that made them stand out. Even in the late sixties and early seventies he sounded like a man displaced from his times, plucked from the thirties Dustbowl or perhaps even the not too distant future. Beck adds some nice touches here, lovely backing vocals, well-placed echo, and a whistling coda, but his heartbreak sounds a touch too slick despite the valiant attempts. Leading his fans to investigate the fallen cowboy's works for themselves might be the tribute of more lasting worth.
