The Beggars Group has announced that two of its long running labels, Too Pure and Beggars Banquet, have been dissolved into Ivo-Watts Russell’s 4AD. Too Pure owners Paul Cox and Richard Roberts, who also ran the legendary Sausage Machine club in London, gave much needed exposure to artists such as PJ Harvey, Stereolab, and Electrelane after starting the label in 1989.
The history of Beggars Banquet goes back even further--to 1977 and the debut single by punk stalwarts the Lurkers. Subsequent signings included Gary Numan, Bauhaus, the Cult, and the Associates. In a strange twist to this story, 4AD was originally started as a Beggars Banquet subsidiary in 1979, and has now come back to bite the hand that feeds. Or at least give it an affectionate nibble.
Former Too Pure signings Stereolab will release one of the first albums affected by this deal. Chemical Chords is relased by 4AD on August 19.
