Tom Waits awarded in El Paso
Tom Waits has been awarded an unusual honor as his Glitter and Doom tour rolls through the South. The gruff-voiced singer, who is set to perform in Terry Gilliam’s new movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, got a surprise when a uniformed officer showed up on stage during his set at El Paso’s Plaza Theatre.

The officer was there to present Waits with a key to the city, and he was joined by councilwoman Susie Boyd, who gave him an accompanying plaque. The startled Waits responded to the presence of the officer with amusement. "I paid all those tickets,” he said. “She was dead when I got there." The Glitter and Doom tour continues with a date tomorrow in Columbus, Ohio. [NME]
