Tom Morello discusses Rage Against the Machine reunion show

Via: MTV
RATM guitarist Tom Morello recently spoke to MTV about the band's upcoming reunion show at this year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. When asked why the band was reuniting for the show, Morello said that the goal was "To deliver a knockout blow to the Bush administration." Morello went on to explain his reasoning:
"Is it coincidence that in the seven years that Rage Against the Machine has been away that the country has slid into right-wing purgatory? I think not. It occurred to all of us that the times were right to see if we can knock the Bush administration out in one fell swoop, and we hope to do that job well. This administration has done enough damage that it may take generations to undo. This is an administration that believes it's beyond the laws of the land, which is fine for emperors, but not so great for presidents. One thing this president isn't above is the laws of physics, and there is no action without reaction. And we're part of that reaction."
Now, I don't want to tell Tom Morello how to wage his political battles, but wouldn't this kind of undertaking have been a lot more fruitful back in 2003-2004 before Bush won his second term in office? Just a thought...
Stumble It!

Wow, what ego. Morello REALLY thinks the reason the U.S. has gone to hell in a handbasket in the last few years is because Rage hasn't been making music?! Phenomenally self-centered. I wonder what Zach has to say. Hopefully he isn't so deluded.

That's what I was thinking too, overstating his influence quite a bit methinks. And it's not exactly like everybody's been silent about Bush for the last 7 years.

I think the knock-out punch to the bush administration will come as a statute against running for a third term.

I can only hope he was kidding. Not only is this arrogant, but totally ridiculous for the reason you mentioned Justin. Bizarre.

February 2, 2007 at 1:57 p.m.

this is why i have no interest in seeing them at coachella.

and to think i just air-drummed to "tire me" this afternoon. i feel so dirty.

Morello's a lot smarter than you guys are giving him credit for. Clearly, the Bush rationale is an excuse 1) for the band to get back together (because if think about it, Audioslave has always been a vehicle to get Cornell back into the spotlight and make everyone some money to boot)2) test the waters to see how loud the "reunite for a new album" pleas getand, if they're as booming as I would expect them to be, 3) make RATM a thing again for at least one more tour. Cornell, meanwhile, will release his second solo album, tour off that without his band (which is toast, I'm willing to bet) and become a sequel of Robert Plant, complete with charred vocals by the time he's 50. No one (not even Zach) is delusional enough to think that one, long-awaited RATM set will come close to toppling a presidential administration awash with money and more interconnected than the human circulation system. In fact, Morello sounds like a politician here himself, politicking for a musical and financial future all four of the band members never should have forfeited in the first place.

I think that what he said is a little crazy now I love the band but if Morello thinks that if they get back together now is going to change peoples opinions on the war hes wrong it's to late for that, but them coming back would make alot of fans happy to here them on the radio insted of some stupid emo band. I might not agree with alot of there politics but as a musician I listen to the music, (as much as i might not like the politics behind it.)

I think that Morello's comments were taken out of context, Coachella is supposed to be a huge event mostly due to the return of Rage. As far as his comments on their hiatus, I think he means that we the American people have turned into a nation of nodding heads, and their here to exploit that!

February 21, 2007 at 6:02 p.m.

Sure. Let's take Morello's comments at face value and hold him accountable with our all knowing opinions -->THE SAME WAY HE HELD BUSH AND HIS ADMINISTRATION ACCOUNTABLE FOR NO WMD'S IN IRAQ. In fact maybe you've all found what is really "wrong" with our nation. We are all so full of opinions based on ego driven lies.

March 7, 2007 at 2:25 p.m.

wow. EGO! i seriously doubt that the decline of the u.s. political system was caused by the breakup of rage. sounds good though. i'm looking forward to seeing them.

March 14, 2007 at 8:24 p.m.

They are a political band and they say political things. Rage has influenced millions of people around the world through their music. It's a powerful thing to have that many people listening to what you have to say in form of a song. He's simply saying the band plans on flexing that influence on the state of things in the near future, I for one hopes that means more great music.

What in the name of Jerry Brightonhammer was that all about? I dont' know but it doesn't make sense to me.

April 12, 2007 at 3:43 p.m.

its probably a ******* joke

April 12, 2007 at 4:26 p.m.

I've always believed Morello's ideology played second fiddle to his ego. This grandiose declaration (assuming it hasn't been altered or misquoted or taken out of context) is further proof of that. His guitar schtick is no longer that interesting either. But I would give just about anything to hear Zack de la Rocha, whose earnestness I've never doubted, fuming and raging into that mic again. Bring on a new Rage album! And maybe hire a new guitar player. . .

April 28, 2007 at 12:22 p.m.

Wow, I'm amazed! and shocked!...I can't believe that so many of you seem to be missing the point of this. He was clearly being facetious! The comments themselves where completely off the cuff and merely a spontaneous attempt at levity (he was joking around). If any of you have ever heard or read an interview with Tom you would know that he is not egotistical in the least. Although the mere music itself should clue you into to this, they are after all performing songs about injustices, the raping and exploitation of peoples and cultures, class struggle, etc...not necessarily the most sexy self-centered of topics (it's not as if they are writing ditties about money and girls!). Also, I am sure that he would not be hesitant to pull the chain of most mainstream media agencies, especially MTV! I believe that we all would wish that conquering the Bush administration's neo-conservative right wing policies would be as simple as merely reuniting a rock and roll band but really...come on... who the hell with a brain in their head would think that that is even remotely possible? Definitely not any of us and surely not Tom Morello. Given the fact that Tom holds a degree in Poli-Sci from Harvard and has been passionately involved in populist causes for many years, I hardly believe that even an ego the size of the Hindenburg could trump his common sense, knowledge, and historical perspective of socio-economic and political affairs. One band, one show, in the California desert erasing and changing a 7 year imperialistic extravaganza...well... It would be like thinking that you could cure world hunger by praying to a grapefruit and chanting passages from the Wallum Olum. By the way LaEscapia...post when and where you'll be playing your next gig...I think a lot of us would like to stop by and check out some of your "guitar schtick" You must really be something special....;)

What a very pretentious thing to say, but then again when a band literally made a living preaching these messages, what more can you expect? That being said, whatever Morello's reason's for reuniting RATM, I will be traveling long distances to see one of the greatest bands of all time.

May 1, 2007 at 9:41 a.m.

Inside Out. Now that was a great band.

May 2, 2007 at 2:54 a.m.

you guys are freaking morons that dont see reality past your ass thats why the bush administration is doing what ever they want to do because idiots like you who defend his ******** with out looking at the outcome . there are allot of people dying out there because of his stupid mistakes all he cares about is making his pockets fat so that when he leaves office his generations will always be rich . money gives you power in politics i can already see in a few years another piece of **** bush running for office and running **** to the ground. i think rage is the the voice of all of us who are fed up with the goverments ********. so get your head out of your ass all of you that wrote your stupid ass coments. i want to see waht you have to say when your family has to die because of this ******* bush . and they will trust me since you are all for his ass. people like you then go running with your ass handed to you .morons

May 27, 2007 at 11:32 p.m.

People, don't be sheep. He was kidding. How can you say that you like Rage but don't like what they sang about or stood for. You can't have one without the other. They were/are angry about exactly the policies that Bush/Cheney stand for. I wish that they would have thought of that before causing a riot out side of the Democratic convention in 2000. They protested the wrong party. If we are going to talk egos here there is none larger than the dunce residing at 1600 Pa. Ave.

June 22, 2007 at 1:31 a.m.

Get back together and shut everyone up.

August 10, 2007 at 9:14 p.m.

First off, did the majority of u idiots actually read what he said??? U stupid asses think he was sayin all that happened cuz rage wasnt making music?!! Looks like bush has really won 1 war, the war of manipulating the retards to come to retarded conclusions, which retards usually do. Since this generation needs spoonfeeding 24/7, i'll break it down for u. He simply stated, that since bush has been in office, the politically enfused music that IS ratm, would be so much more powerful than before because the inspiration would be endless. Rage doing songs about the WORST ADMINISTRATION in the history of the US, would be like a homeless family winning the lottery, pay attention kids, the possibilities would be on such a higher level that have been known previously, it'd be insane. I agree with some of u tho, Rage needs to just make a new album, it would be so much more powerful than a concert the majority of us dont even kno about. So why dont u just shut the hell up about toms ego and blah blib blahh, open ur eyes damn it, and quit pissin me off with ur ignorance. Take it from a true Rage fan, and visionary, The Matt T Self. Yall can't hang with the truth, cuz you've all been assimilated.

December 10, 2007 at 2:18 p.m.

politics aside, rage is one of the best bands ever and i'm looking forward to seeing them at Rock-am-Ring this summer! woot!!

December 16, 2007 at 12:25 a.m.

Tom was playing with your tiny minds. Rage is the most honest and exciting band in years. Bush is retarded, and we the American people should WAKE UP!!!

January 27, 2008 at 2:16 p.m.

Rage are good but not Right-Said-Fred good

February 27, 2008 at 12:52 a.m.

Do you all think Tom is that conceited? He is just doing what Rage has always done, and that is to stir up a frenzy and take things away from where they've been before. RATM is one of the best and most influential bands of our generation, and I have a feeling that there is much more to come. I'm waiting for another album with held breath, and the more they tour the more I think that they'll feel like putting a fresh message out there. I know the band has more to say, and we all have the privilege of listening.
