Before taking on hyped indie-rock favorites like Fiery Furnaces and We Are Wolves, Fat Possum Records was strictly a blues label, and the last couple of times it took a chance on any neo-blues bands, it got its hands on the Black Keys and that other Ohio rock group, the Heartless Bastards. A deeply voiced Erika Wennerstrom practically owns this band; one of the few frontwomen out there without a cutesy/tortured/artsy schtick, Wennerstrom takes the rasp that Chan Marshall'''s known for and answers the question of what Chan would do if she tried to extend herself just a bit further. The Bastards are probably best known for their great cover of Junior Kimbrough'''s ''"Done Got Old,''" off the Sunday Nights tribute, but they'''ve also got two solid albums in their recent history, one of which (last August'''s All This Time) was kept surprisingly quiet on the publicity front. Since you probably missed out on both of their L.A. appearances last year, now'''s the chance to play catch-up on a band that'''s completely unpretentious and badly needed to bring that sea of '''80s glitz closer to its tragic death.
