Today's L.A. Events Preview: Robbers on High Street

Robbers on High Street @ The Echo, 1/27

While it'''s not surprising to learn that Robbers on High Street are a New York City band, their best work seems slightly more ambitious then some of their otherwise appealing peers on the post-CBGB scene. Ben Trokan and Steve Mercado, the songwriting members of the quartet, have stronger pop sensibilities than the Strokes or the Walkmen, and modest radio hits like ''"Japanese Girls''" off 2005'''s Tree City bring back fond memories of early MTV and gray suits in front of hot pink backgrounds. Robbers on High Street may not be ready for the Wiltern, but the Echo is just big enough to be a bit too small a venue for this show, which makes it just about right. (ML)
