Today's L.A. Events Preview: Helmet

Helmet/Totimoshi @ Troubadour, 1/31

By now nearly everyone knows about the nefarious arm-twisting that led to Helmet'''s 2004 ''"reformation.''" The story goes that Interscope tactlessly informed lead singer and mastermind Page Hamilton that they intended to shelve his recently completely solo album should he not agree to market it as a Helmet release. Hamilton eventually conceded and went on to enlist the services of several studio pros for the widely panned Size Matters album and tour. Well, it should come as no surprise then that Hamilton has left Jimmy Iovine'''s autocracy for greener pastures -- indie label Warcon -- and hired Strap It On and Meantime alum Wharton Tiers to co-produce their latest release, Monochrome. And while half of the band'''s roster is still composed of hired guns, this album is said to be a return to form for the sludge rock pioneers. Be sure to arrive early as the Bay Area power-trio Totimoshi -- whose early Helmet idolatry is self-evident -- is a must hear. (ZH)

One of the best shows ever saw was Helmet when I was in high school. I still have a tour shirt from that show unless my mom threw it out.

I saw them a couple months ago and I was really excited for the show. They didnt even sound like Helmet. Page had a falsetto voice and I thought it was a different lead singer. I really liked the original drummer John Stanier, and it was some other guy. Very disappointing. Don't bother.
