The Octopus Project @ Knitting Factory, 2/15Bands have been merging electronic textures with organic instruments for at least a quarter of a century now, so I think it'''s about time that we give rest to the ol''' ''"man vs. machine''" trope that so many critics invoke when trying to describe a band like the Octopus Project. If anything, the Texan instrumental rock trio (beefed up to a quartet on the road) forces man and machine to shake hands, the band's drum machines and samplers bear-hugging real drums and electric guitar like the two strands of a DNA helix. The House of Apples and Eyeballs, the band'''s recent file-trading collaboration with psychedelic post-rockers Black Moth Super Rainbow, amps up the analogue synth quotient and keeps the energy pulsing. Here'''s hoping The Octopus Project plans to rock some of those tunes at this show. Also playing: acoustic indie band Meals for Children, the cheeky glam-rocking Angeleno Alex Antebi (a.k.a. Conquistador), and the not-quite-there-yet experimentalists [post-foetus]. (ER)
