Artists in the freak-folk scene certainly know a thing or two about myth making. There'''s the enigmatic Jandek, whose albums-to-live-appearances ratio is like a million to two or three. There'''s Vashti Bunyan, who gave up music for decades before recently returning to claim her throne as queen of the scene. And then there'''s Tom and Christina Carter, who record under the name Charalambides. Like a much more famous guy/girl duo, they'''re dodgy about having formerly been married. And their stage appearances are exceedingly rare. So to catch them at the tiny Smell is anything but a common experience. Last year, Charalambides released A Vintage Burden, a gorgeous song cycle that was criminally under-heard. Then Christina branched out on her own to put in a guest vocal appearance on DJ Shadow'''s The Outsider and released a solo LP, the hauntingly beautiful Electrice. Sharing the bill are fellow guy/girl avante-garde noisemakers MV & EE as well as local experimentalists Veer Right Young Pastor and Pocohaunted.
