Presidential hopeful Barack Obama has received endorsements from lots of musicians, but a recent endorsement from the man behind “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue” is possibly the most unexpected. Toby Keith, who campaigned for the reelection of George Bush in 2004, told Associated Press reporter Ryan Pearson that he supports Obama and is a registered Democrat:“There’s a big part of America that really believes that there is a war on terrorism, and that we need to finish up. I thought it was beautiful the other day when Obama went to Afghanistan and got educated about Afghanistan and Iraq. He came back and said some really nice things. So as far as leadership and patriotism goes, I think it’s really important that those things have to take place. And I think he’s the best Democratic candidate we’ve had since Bill Clinton. And that’s coming from a Democrat."
Hopefully a voter won’t base his or her choice on the entertainment figures that endorse a candidate, but statements from an artist with a fanbase like Keith’s could help Obama gain a little credibility in the “red” states he’ll need for victory. If the endorsement puts him over the top, we could be not only looking at a dark horse to play the Inaugural Ball, but the nation’s new Secretary of Four Wheelin’. [Tiny Mix Tapes]
