Tim Burton's films are full of wonderfully weird characters, and as a kid it can be especially empowering to see him embrace such oddball outsiders as Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice. But he seems to especially despise one demographic: fat people.
That's the conclusion that Film School Rejects comes to after some Burton super-sleuthing. The author was somewhat taken back by Burton's utter hatred of every paunchy character in his latest film Frakenweenie, so he consulted other Burton projects and found that in most of them, a fat person was either a villain, a punch line or both. Some examples: Francis Buxton in Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Otho from Beetlejuice, the Penguin from Batman Returns, and even the portly ape Limbo in Burton's remake of The Planet of the Apes. Could this all be a mere coincidence, or does the filmmaker have a secret anti-fat agenda? Head to Film School Rejects to see more examples.
