The xx Introduce "Audio Sculpture" Version of Debut Album

The eponymous debut album from downbeat Brits The xx almost ruled the roost in the Prefix end-of-year charts, ultimately just missing out to Animal Collective’s ubiquitous Merriweather Post Pavilion. The band will be at SWSW in Austin, Texas, later this year, where the hype abut them is likely to gain further momentum.

In the meantime, the band members have brought the record to life in a different way, with an “audio sculpture” based on the album now installed in a London gallery. A private view of the sculpture was held last night (Jan. 7) at the Vinyl Factory space underneath the Phonica record store in Soho.

The exhibition is free, and will be open to the public between Jan. 8-12. It is called The xx: A Sculpture Of The Album, and was produced by Saam Farahmand, who is a music video director. Phonica is also selling a limited edition gatefold sleeve vinyl edition of the record, more details about that available here.

How do you guys feel about limited-edition releases? Do you go out and buy them? I'm just wondering how effective it is as a way to drum up sales.

I used to rush out and get limited-edition releases, but not as much anymore. I do miss collecting stuff from Boris and the like, though.

I have to say I'm still a sucker at times for limited edition vinyl releases of albums that are personal classics. Definitely would not mind having the xx on wax in a well designed jacket.
