Late last year, Toronto’s dark R&B pop star The Weeknd released his chart-dominating album Starboy. He’s been touring all over the world in support of the record. And now, he has teamed up with A$AP Rocky and Young Thug to breathe new life into one of the album’s standout tracks, “Reminder.” The three artists join forces to showcase their varying talents on the Starboy hit.
The remixed version opens with The Weeknd and Young Thug trading off AutoTune-d vocal runs. The contrast of Tesfaye’s soft, angelic vocals and Thug’s gritty mumbling is front and center. Thug’s verse centers around his quest for success, as he raps, “I used to pray to hear my songs on the radio / Growing up, my foot was only after kickin doors.” The Weeknd’s original chorus and verse from the album version are still present, in which talks about his massive 2015 single, “Can’t Feel My Face.” “I just won a new award for a kids show / Talking ’bout a face numbing off a bag of blow / I’m like, goddamn, bitch, I am not a Teen Choice,” he raps. Rocky’s verse is low-key and concise, rapping, “No way you think if ever I decide to cut my hair like Abel / Just like Jaden Smith, I’ll probably walk around a day with it.”
The original “Reminder” track was given an all-star music video, where A$AP Rocky was also present. Additionally, he recruited his fellow Torontonian superstar, Drake, as well as Travis Scott and others. Since its release late last year, Starboy has been certified Double Platinum.
The Weeknd is still on the road for his Starboy World Tour. His upcoming dates include support from Gucci Mane, Nav, and French Montana. The tour is currently poised to wrap up this December in Australia. Check out more information on tour dates and tickets here.
