As music continually evolves and splinters into numerous genres, it is unclear whether the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will retain its coveted status. The industry is in turmoil, and the term rock 'n' roll no longer seems to hold significant semantic value. However, on Monday night, a number of bands, artists, and industry professionals joined the historic ranks at the 25th annual induction ceremony in New York. The Stooges, Genesis, and Jimmy Cliff were among a group of performers that received recognition for their lifetime of music achievement.
For the Stooges, this honor seems long overdue. The punk pioneers were eligible for the Hall for 16 years before receiving the honor. Acknowledging this in his acceptance speech, Iggy Pop declared: “Roll over, Woodstock. We won.” Additionally, the Swedish pop group ABBA and Graham Nash's original group The Hollies were added to Hall's performing members. All but ABBA, which formed in the early 1970s, have careers dating back to the 1960s. And while these vaunted music icons are questionably rock 'n' roll, they are undeniably worthy of historic recognition. [via NYTimes]
