The Spider-Man trilogy that Sam Raimi directed became an instant classic, but Sony didn't waste any time by leaving the franchise on the back burner. Within a couple of years, the production company had already committed to restarting the series with an all-new cast and a revamped lineup of actors.
Expectations were understandably high, so when Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man was released this summer, audiences and studio execs breathed a collective sigh of relief. The film is fantastic, and while it won't make anyone forget about the wild ride Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire led us on through three movies, it does deliver on action as well as heart.
That success has led Sony to go all-in on Spidey and his new director. According to Variety, Marc Webb will return for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is tentatively slated to hit theaters in the summer of 2014. Andrew Garfield will return as Peter Parker, and Emma Stone is expected to reprise her role as love interest Gwen Stacy. Webb is certainly excited to be back on board, but seriously -- with a name like that, what else was he going to direct?
