Amongst much musical hilarity on this week's episode with Justin Timberlake (see here), a quick preview for Saturday Night Live's next new episode in a few weeks told us the musical guest will be The Shins. The band will of course be promoting Wincing the Night Away, out January 23. The SNL episode will broadcast on January 13. Hosting is Jake Gyllenhall, so this is an 18-34 year-old woman's wet dream. If memory serves me right, this is the first Sub Pop band to play SNL, no?
wasn't Nirvana signed to Sub Pop back in the day? do they count?

but Nirvana wasn't on Sub Pop when they played SNL; they had signed to Geffen at that point. are the Shins still on Sub Pop?

Yeah, Nirvana was a Sub Pop alum by the time they made it to SNL. This release from The Shins is still on Sub Pop, but I wouldn't be surprised if they try to make a move to a major soon a la The Decemberists or Modest Mouse.
