The Roots Planning Orchestral Concept Album

Following last June’s release How I Got Over, the Roots quickly began prepping their politically fueled collaboration project with John Legend. And by September, they were ready to drop Wake Up!, an album made up almost entirely of cover songs. The Roots have never been musical slouches, though, so they have wasted no time getting to work on their twelfth record to date. It doesn’t have a name yet, but Questlove told Billboard that it will be the band’s “first full-fledged narrative concept album.”

Building on that statement was the group’s MC, Black Thought, who said the album will be like How I Got Over but in reverse. “Instead of from dark to light, it’s an album that goes from light to dark,” he said. Sonically, Questo said that we should expect a record that is “heavy on sort of orchestral chamber music with harder beats in it.”

Black Thought added that they would like to get the album out this November, but it’s more likely to drop next January or February. So for now, check out the awesome video for How I Got Over‘s “The Fire.”
