According to Questlove, of the Roots, "July 4th should be to Philadelphia what New Year’s Eve is to Time Square in New York City." But he isn't just tossing that idea out there -- he's making it happen with a newly curated free event called Philly's Fourth of July Jam. It's set to feature more than 25 artists from across genre lines, including Earth, Wind & Fire, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Michael McDonald, and Estelle. There will also be a smaller stage with sets from Kindred the Family Soul, Res, Chin Chin, Nico’s Gun, and others.
And because Questo is the music director for the main stage, he and the rest of The Roots will serve as the headliner and backing band for numerous acts. Apparently, some of them will join forces onstage, too, which could make for some interesting duets.
The Jam itself might be taking place on the Fourth, but there are some shows lined up for July 3, too. Diplo, Jazzy Jeff and Questlove, DJ Spinna, and J Rocc will be manning the turntables, at the same time, in different rooms at PSK at Club Voyeur. Good luck picking a room to stay in the whole night.
And at the Theatre of Living Arts on South Street, buzzing rappers Dom Kennedy, Casey Veggies, and Dosage will perform. Elsewhere, local indie rockers Working Drugs, CSLSX, and Wrestling are playing at Johnny Brendas while the Legendary Dobbs will host Firm Taqtics, Da Rezarekt, SPIN, and the Violent Tone.
Looks like your Fourth of July plans got that much better.
