A couple months after it was announced, here are some details regarding John Legend's Roots-produced Wake Up Sessions LP. Apparently the album was started when Legend and The Roots tried to cover Arcade Fire's "Wake Up," and failed, and instead launched an old soul song covers album. The album will feature covers of Roberta Flack, Donnie Hathaway, Nina Simone and Marvin Gaye, but ?uestlove promises it will be deep cuts only, no recognizable singles. He also promises Legend's most raw vocal performance:
"I wanted this to be his worst performance ever. The side I wanted to expose was very raw, so for every vocal take he did, I tried to choose the one with the cracks."
That sounds promising. The album is due out soon after the new Roots album, How I Got Over, which is due out sometime this summer. [P4K]
