Former Office star Mindy Kaling's new sitcom The Mindy Project did well in the Tuesday night television ratings. Vulture reports that the show drew the attention of New Girl viewers who stayed on FOX after the Zooey Deschanel comedy went off the air at 9:30.
The Mindy Project had 4.8 million viewers last night, and it was number one for its timeslot among adult viewers under 35. It also tied for second place with Dancing With the Stars among adult viewers under 50.
The really impressive news is that the show captured over 90 percent of the audience for the 9:00 episode of New Girl (the show's second episode of the night), which had 5.2 million viewers.
It looks like fans of Zooey Deschanel's "adorkable" TV persona were intrigued by Kaling's similarly girly new show. Followers of the former Office writer and supporting star will be happy to learn that her new venture did so well on its first night.
Maybe Kaling's former Office co-star Rainn Wilson was right when he predicted that The Mindy Project would be a hit. Will it be, as he called it, "the next Sex & The City"? We'll have to keep tuning in to find out.
