The Flaming Lips take on The Who, Mars

It’s not enough for Wayne Coyne to fufill a lifelong dream by performing The Who on national television next week. He’s taken the Flaming Lips to a place truly out of this world—literally.

The noisy oddballs of Flaming Lips have released concept albums in their day, but this is their first stab at a concept film. The band will star in Christmas On Mars, a film about just that, in the mold of a Tommy, The Wall, and Yellow Submarine.. Needless to say, hallucinogens will almost certainly enhance the viewing experience. This is a movie seven years in the making, so all in all it’s a pretty good time to be the Flaming Lips.

The Who Rock Honors, which features the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, and Incubus in addition to the Flaming Lips, premieres July 17th at 9 P.M. Eastern. If you live in another time zone, you still have time make a midnight Dark Knight screening.
