The Flaming Lips’ 2011 Plan: New Songs Every Month

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Flaming Lips leader Wayne Coyne announced that the long-running psych rockers will be taking the Kanye route this year, choosing to release new tracks each month in 2011 as opposed to putting together a full-length album. In the interview, Coyne chalks up this decision to the exhausting album writing and recording process, which isn’t too surprising to hear when one considers the sheer scope of the Lips’ last release, 2009’s Embryonic. While the process will be documented on video, what isn’t clear is how each of these songs will be released. Says Coyne:

“The dilemma is whether we’re going to release it on vinyl, cereal boxes, or some of it on toys that we make. Sometimes, the music is the simplest part of any of these things. We’ll be making these little videos that connect in the end to a bigger movie we’ll be making next year as well.”

There is no word as to whether or not the songs will be compiled on to a single release once the project as reached its end.
