Sad news for fans of country-tinged acoustic duets: the Dutchess and the Duke, otherwise known as Seattle's Kimberly Morrison and Jesse Lortz, respectively, are calling it quits. The couple put out two albums of stripped-down acoustic harmonies, 2008's She's the Dutchess, He's the Duke and 2009's Sunset / Sunrise. They have a long history in the city's punk scene, so this is likely not the last we've heard from them. Nonetheless, this is bummer for Dutchess and the Duke fans like myself.
In an email to Seattle Weekly, an employee at their label, Hardly Art, said "I think their two records are clearly two of the best records to come out of Seattle in the last several years, and Hardly Art was honored to have been able to put them out."
The duchy, it seems, will have to be passed. Preferably to the left hand side.
The guys still have two upcoming dates, though only one stateside:
11.26 Seattle, WA: Tractor Tavern
10-12.12 Minehead, UK: Bowlie 2 ATP fest
This actually totally bums me out. I only discovered them by randomly picking their album to review based only on their name, and ended up really liking them. Shame.
