The Chicago Reader Recommends Ten Obscure Releases of 2009

The MTV list of 2009's top albums came out earlier this week. Now, sesh out on some more obscure releases courtesy of the Chicago Reader. From the subtle queer, feminist agenda of riot-grrl-influenced Swan Island (that's them in the pic) to the “tribal surf psych” drone-mongering of Veer Right Young Pastor, the list cruises on the harder side of the noise spectrum, though the Reader does sneak in the “neon melancholy” of Arthur Russell.

The full list is as follows:

The Aquarium | The Aquarium | Dischord

Swan Island | The Centre Will Hold | Holocene

Shit and Shine | Jealous of Shit and Shine | Riot Season

Daniel Higgs | Ancestral Songs | Holy Mountain

Beat Beat Beat | Living in the Future | Dirtnap

Lake of Dracula | Skeletal Remains | Savage Land

Ut | In Gut's House | Blast First/Mute

Arthur Russell | Springfield | Audika

Veer Right Young Pastor | Self-released CD-R

Ponytail | Kamehameha | Creative Capitalism

This is a very cool list. If you dig Daniel Higgs, definitely take a moment to check out some of his original artwork for our Artist Music Journal series. http://www.soundscreendesign.com/artist-music-journals-edition-03-daniel-higgs-out-now. Keep up the good work, Prefix!
