Considering that The Avengers became the third-highest grossing film of all time earlier this summer, it’s no surprise to hear that the studio has plans for a sequel. Walt Disney Studios officially announced today that a sequel to the superhero film is on its way and director Joss Whedon is on board. Nerds everywhere will have to remain patient, however, since the blockbuster sequel isn’t slated to hit theaters until May 1, 2015.
In the meantime Marvel has scheduled several films following the individual members of the superhero team. 2013 will see Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World on May 3 and November 8 respectively. Then, in 2014 Marvel will release Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy on April 4 and August 1 respectively. Another Avengers film, Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, is also on its way but does not yet have an official release date. As previously announced, Marvel is also shopping around a television series that takes places in the same universe as the films. [EW]
