In a completely unsurprising development, Internet celebrity Susan Boyle has crushed all comers to claim the top spot on the Billboard 200 by moving 701,000 copies of I Dreamed a Dream in its first week out. That sales figure is the biggest of this year, topping Eminem's Relapse sales by nearly 100,000 copies. The 701,000 copies is actually the biggest sales mark in more than a year on the Billboard 200, nearly hitting the mark of 784,000 copies set by AC/DC last October. Furthermore, Boyle now has the biggest opening week sales of any female artist's debut album, crushing Ashanti's previous record of 503,000 copies. [Billboard]
It's not surprising, but it's still kind of, well, surprising.
that's a lot of albums
I think it's surprising. I didn't realize she was that popular on this side of the pond. This will probably prompt major labels to sign up a whole host of similar singers.
that is a ton of albums. wow.
yay go Susan!
UK ALL THE WAY
