SuperNova Records says goodbye to the CD

Steve Austin, founder of forward-thinking metal outfit Today Is the Day, has announced that his indie label SuperNova Records will no longer sell CDs, and will henceforth focus its resources on digital downloads and vinyl. Says Austin of the shift in retail formats: “People are changing the ways that they buy, listen and discover new music. The record companies…have not adapted to the current market and thus are dying off by trying to stop something that is impossible to stop rather than profit from this new way of buying and selling music. So, we choose to move forward into the future with digital downloads. At the same time...we respect the vinyl album and are going to offer all SuperNova releases in limited edition vinyl formats.” Austin also pointed to the significant environmental costs of manufacturing and shipping CDs.

While SuperNova is not the first record label to embrace the advent of digital music, it is one of the few that has stemmed its production of CDs completely.

To kick off SuperNova’s new retail direction, the following releases will be available for download from the SuperNova website on September 16:

Hope And Suicide - Hope And Suicide

Luckily, unlike CDs, there are no environmental costs to manufacturing and shipping LPs.

To be fair, they're doing very limited vinyl runs for the LPs, prolly far fewer copies than what they'd print in a CD format. Baby steps!
