A Super Old VHS Video Of A Newscast Featuring The Cramps And Alex Chilton

A friend of mine described watching this video as kind of “like watching a cassette tape” and I think that pretty much nails it. Between all the jump arounds and the VHS-left-to-rot-underground scrambling, you’ll catch glimpses of The Cramps (looking young and including guitarist Bryan Gregory, who left the band in 1980 and died in 2001, and – of course – Lux Interior, RIP), as well as the late Alex Chilton, who is famous for heading up one of the best bands of all time, but less known for producing The Cramps’ debut EP and long playing follow up (Gravest Hits and Songs the Lord Taught Us, respectively). And there’s voice over from a local Memphis newscaster, trying to help what was likely a confused audience understand the “punk, new wave and rockabilly” hybrid being profiled. It’s worth watching, if only to touch base with a time that seems a lot more musically earnest. [The Daily Swarm]
