Fortify your brain/blood barrier and put on a fresh set of Huggys: Sunn 0))) are back with their first studio album under their own name since Black One (2005), and if the end result bears out the promise of the early details, it may change the way you think about Sunn 0))).Entitled Monoliths & Dimensions, Sunn 0)))’s seventh caps off a fertile period for the duo of Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley. Last year they recorded the live Dømkirke LP in a Norwegian cathedral and played several performances of their debut The Grimmrobe Demos (2000) to celebrate their tenth anniversary, with more to come in 2009.
Monoliths & Dimensions features the core guitar duo and their plethora of amps and bone-rattling timbres, plus a small country’s worth of guest musicians. These include repeat Sunn 0))) collaborators like composer Eyvind Kang, abstruse guitarist Oren Ambarchi, Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Earth’s Dylan Carlson and vocalist Jessika Kenney, leading a Viennese women’s choir.
New additions to the robed fold are Julian Priester (worked with Sun Ra, John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock) and avant horn player Stuart Dempster. Also expect upright bass, French & English horns, harp & flute, piano, brass, reed & string ensembles, for what Sunn 0))) describe as "the most musical piece we’ve done, and also the heaviest, powerful and most abstract set of chords we've laid to tape." Which is saying something.
Monoliths & Dimensions is due out in late may on Southern Lord.
