For the longest time, one of the biggest mysteries in pop music has been the identity of the subject of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain." The most popular guesses up to this point have been Mick Jagger, Kris Kristofferson, Warren Beatty, Cat Stevens, and James Taylor, but the apparent subject of the track is none of these: apparently, a voice whispers "David" in a remastered version of the song, which has led a lot of people to think that record label head David Geffen is the guy who's so vain.
The David Geffen theory is motivated by a belief that Geffen paid a lot more attention to Joni Mitchell, who was on the same label as Simon at the time, but does that really merit a whole hit song written about him? [Huffington Post]
