If you’re the try-before-you-buy type, get thee hence to the NPR site, where they’re streaming Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House 1968 in full. The archival live release is set for a December 2 street date. It finds a young Neil (sorry) in full-on acoustic-troubadour mode, with only his acoustic guitar for company, delivering haunting versions of everything from the title tune to early songs like "The Loner" and the surreal, Dylanesque epic "Last Trip to Tulsa." Extra entertainment value is added by Young’s Topanga Canyon hippie between-song banter. The world’s been treated to a fair amount of archival live Young over the last couple of years, with the release of sets from Massey Hall and the Fillmore East, but in both performance and song selection, Sugar Mountain is easily the equal of both of those.
