Stephen Malkmus is a huge fantasy basketball nerd
Maybe it's just me, but Stephen Malkmus doesn't seem like the type of guy who would enjoy fantasy sports. But rather than sitting in a coffee house reading Denis Johnson or writing snarky replies to blog posts, Malkmus freely admits to spending a good amount of time tracking Iverson's minutes and wondering how he wasted a draft pick on Beno Udrih. He polishes his sparkling indie credentials in the end, though, by saying in the interview that he really isn't into "name" players in the league. Malkmus says that if given the chance, he'll  "skip Melo, Baron, Garnett, Artest, Yao, Kobe, Pau, Boozer, Vince Carter, Marion, and Jason Kidd if at all possible. Those cats are not my bag." I hope he's not playing for money. Fantasy leagues don't run on individualism. [Roto World]

I was surprised to read Lanegan was a hoop nerd and now I read this. Maybe I wasn't so different growing up loving hoops and indie rock.

His buddy (and Gutter Twins partner) Greg Dulli is also a bit of a hoops nerd. And, reportedly, a decent baller!

On a similar note, former Pavement member Bob Nastanovich is a huge horse racing fan. From his Wiki page:

"Nastanovich is an avid fan of thoroughbred horse racing, both owning, breeding and managing many horses in his current home, Louisville, Kentucky. He has also served as jockey agent for Greta Kuntzweiler and Joe Johnson. His most recent venture is an online analysis of American horse races, and sees him attempting to give better coverage to an otherwise limited area."

Fantasy basketball seems like it takes way more time than fantasy football.

I'm not sure why this is a news story but it's not surprising at all that malkmus -and lanegan -are hoop fans. I remember Malkmus naming his starting five when Insound(who are huge sports fans) did their sports-themed catalogue a while back. He said he wanted people on the team who looked like they could both shred and score a double-double...so Colin Meloy wasn't invited (zing!). He chose one of the guys from Built to Spill who apparently was really good and then the lead singer of QOTSA...can't remember the rest. But apparently they play some pick-up ball a lot...which would be easy in the music-friendly Portland scene. Just a little FYI.
