Most folks already know how Steve Stein became Steinski and achieved underground hip-hop immortality in the '80s with his seminal series of mixes known as "The Lessons." Overflowing with hundreds of samples that could never be cleared, "The Lessons" have always remained a mostly underground phenomenon, even as their legend grew over the years.
Now the appropriately named Illegal Art has made What Does It All Mean? available. A definitive Steinski collection, it contains "The Lessons" and lots more, but don't sleep on this one. Steinski's dazzling collisions of Gilbert Gottfried, Konk, Groucho Marx, Culture Club, Sly & the Family Stone, Lenny Bruce, James Brown, and more old-school hip-hop than you'll hear anywhere this side of DJ Shadow's basement could still be shooed back to the shadows if the legal winds blow the wrong way.
