There’s a new Squarepusher album due out on Warp on Oct. 19, loftily titled Squarepusher Presents: Shobaleader One – d’Emonstrator. It marks the beginning of a new project for Tom Jenkinson, which he expounds upon via a Q&A on the Warp Records site. He reveals that Shobaleader One is a band that was formed when a group of kids contacted him after he wrote about forming a “fantasy group” on his Just a Souvenir album.
“The overall aim is to articulate my music through the medium of a band,” he says. “I always thought that a band would be a limiting thing. I've got very used to being able to make music by programming or playing without having to explain anything to anyone, and I assumed it would slow everything down if I had to. Actually it has made it quicker because I'm not trying to be four people simultaneously any more.”
The first glimpse of their record together is through the video for “Megazine” (above), which certainly hints at a change in direction for Squarepusher. It’s somewhat reminiscent of Daft Punk’s Discovery in places, with its driving, house-y beat and vocodered vocals, which probably isn’t going to make Jenkinson’s fanbase happy, but fits neatly into his penchant for defying expectations at every turn.
