With summer officially upon us, Spotify has provided a 22 song playlist of their contenders for the always coveted title of “Song of the Summer.”
To create the playlist, Spotify analyzed streaming data, consulted genre and trend experts, scoured social media to get a pulse for the most buzzworthy tracks, and considered factors including each song’s performance on the Billboard charts as well as the most popular Spotify playlists.
The result is a playlist that has a little something for everyone. From Selena Gomez to Lil Uzi, Gaga to Quavo, the gang’s all there. Shanon Cook, Spotify’s Trends Expert said, “There’s a good chance somewhere on this list is the track we’ll be crowning the song of the summer by the end of August.”

Labeled by Spotify as their “Lounging by the Pool” song is the already ubiquitous “I’m The One” by DJ Khaled featuring (literally everyone) Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper Lil’ Wayne. The first time I heard this track I was waiting for appearances from Kanye West and Paul McCartney. Pretty much every “it” guy is on this one…how Wayne made the cut, I’m not exactly sure. But hey, stack that young moolah, baby.
Coming in as Spotify’s “Sunburn Recovery Song” is Lady Gaga’s latest, “The Cure.”
So I’ll admit it, this doesn’t exactly sound like a Lady Gaga song to me. But, with all due respect to Mother Monster herself, is that really the worst thing at this point? With both of her latest albums, 2016’s Joanna and 2013’s Artpop drastically underperforming, maybe making easily digestible radio pop (the stuff that made her a household name to begin with) wouldn’t be the worse thing in the world for her. I’ll admit it with only a little shame: I have already played this song more times than I can count.
As this summer’s “Ultimate Club Banger,” Spotify nabbed Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj’s “Swish Swish.”
(Quick confession: I’ve yet to listen to this song, and if my life goes according to plan, it’ll stay that way.)
For Spotify’s “The Rap Cut” category, Future’s glorious “Mask Off” came in as their victor. When a song comes out in April and is legitimately a contender for song of the summer, you know you’ve got a legendary track. Of course, it doesn’t hurt when you drop a new remix with Kendrick Lamar.
Kendrick’s masterful “DNA.” came in as their pick for “The Summer Workout” song. I haven’t worked out while blasting any tracks from DAMN. but there’s a solid chance that if I did, I might be a little closer to summer body shape.
Rounding off their playlist are the latest tracks from Miley Cyrus, Logic, and Lil Uzi Vert. To read descriptions on all 22 of Spotify’s picks, head over to their official blog.
