Sonic Youth take new songs for a dip in the pool
The summer concert season at McCarren Park Pool came to a permanent close on Saturday with the last ever concert at the makeshift venue. The discussed swimming pool in Brooklyn has hosted some memorable shows over the last three years, and Sonic Youth were a fine choice to bring the festivities to an end.

The group played a set of mostly older material on Saturday, as well as two new songs, and Thurston Moore greeted the crowd by saying: “Welcome to the end of McCarren Pool as we know it.” Sonic Youth’s set list was dominated by material from Daydream Nation, and set closer “Expressway to Yr Skull” (from Evol) was still echoing around the pool as concertgoers exited the venue for the final time.

According to Moore, the two new songs had only been written in the past few days, and most of the lyrics were somewhat improvised. The band is currently working on its first post-major label album for an as-yet undisclosed label. In typical fanboy fashion, Moore could be seen eagerly watching from the side of the stage as support acts Vivian Girls, Times New Viking, and Wolf Eyes opened up the show.
