There’s nothing quite like a corporate tie-in to shake up the indie-rock community. This Billboard article from June ’07 highlights some of the complaints raised when Sonic Youth announced it was releasing a glorified compilation album through Starbucks. The record, which carries the Huey Lewis-esque title Hits Are for Squares, is going to be nestling between the White Mocha Frappuccino’s from June 10. Hits Are for Squares has been compiled by a selection of musicians, writers, filmmakers, and actors, who have all chosen their favorite Sonic Youth tracks. It even includes a few cuts from early albums, such as “Tom Violence” and Expressway to Yr Skull” (from Evol) and “The World Looks Red” (from Confusion is Sex). Do you think Portia de Rossi and Ellen will choose “Disappearer” as the first dance at their wedding? Here’s the full track listing.

Can't imagine too many people buying a Sonic Youth compilation at Starbucks, but maybe I'm wrong.
