Sonic Youth sign to Matador

A week after Thurston Moore spilt the beans about Sonic Youth going indie for their next album, Gerard Cosloy of Matador Records has made it official at Matablog: Sonic Youth have reached an agreement to release their upcoming 19th studio album via Matador. Cosloy promises the album will be out in 2009.

The announcement ends the speculation that the band would release their album through Moore’s own Ecstatic Peace label, which has its albums distributed by Universal. Now that Sonic Youth have jumped to Matador, will Ecstatic Peace follow? [Matablog via Stereogum]

Matador is probably a good home for them. I hope Ecstatic Peace stays as it is, it's a fun label. No need to put any commercial pressures on it.

Matador makes sense, but I always thought it was cool that they were on Geffen. A band that didn't sell a ton of records by major label standards but kept putting out albums for the label.
