Kid-friendly Sonic Youth documentary lands in Vegas

Todd Haynes, Spike Jonze, and Harmony Korine have all worked with Sonic Youth over the years. Dave Markey helped bring the seminal rock-doc 1991: The Year Punk Broke to the screen. In short, the amount of filmmaking talent at their disposal is mouthwatering. So who has the band turned to for its forthcoming documentary feature? In typically contrary fashion, seven high school students, who are all affiliated with the non-profit company Project Moonshine, have shot the film.

The movie, titled Sleeping Nights Awake, is a black and white document of a Sonic Youth show in Reno, Nevada. The kids were allowed to film the band both on- and off-stage at the 2006 show, and the trailer hints at a surprising maturity in their filmmaking. Sleeping Nights Awake is playing at the CineVegas Film Festival, which takes place on June 12-21.
