For a decade-and-a-half, Barcelona has been the site of the Sonar festival, featuring the biggest and best in ambient, techno, house, hip-hop, experimental electronica, and other styles that don't require rock-star guitar poses. Over the years, Aphex Twin, the Beastie Boys, Cut Chemist, Kraftwerk, Matthew Herbert, the Chemical Brothers, and a host of others have graced its stage. This year is no exception, as the 16th annual Sonar is scheduled for June 18-20 in its usual location. The big news, however, is that 2009 will also see a U.S. Sonar presence for the first time ever.
May 12 is the date set for Sonarsound NY, which will take place at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City. On tap for the event are Prefuse 73, DJ/Rupture, hip-hop trio Del Palo Soundystem, and more, making for an international roster of cutting-edge artists. Not only is Sonarsound NY free (reservations required), but just think of all the money you'll be saving on plane tickets to Barcelona.
