You thought you had finally found an oasis of stability in your chaotic life when we revealed the tracklist of the new Smashing Pumpkins album Zeitgeist, didn't you? Well you might wanna think about charging your therapy bills to Billy Corgan, because it's just been announced that the 'Punkins are releasing three different versions of the album, each with a slightly modified tracklist. Even more maddening: each version differs by ONE TRACK. Buy Zeitgeist at Best Buy and you get the bonus track "Death>From Above;" buy Zeitgeist at Target and you get the bonus track "Zeitgeist;" buy it anywhere else (including digital retailers) and you get no bonus track at all.
You know as a marketing plan for an album called Zeitgeist, this idea doesn't seem to capture the spirit of the times too well. The kids don't want to go to the brick 'n mortar shops anymore. It's almost as ridiculous an idea as flouting retail convention and trying to release your album on 7/7/07 (ahem). Not that I advocate illegal downloading, but let's put it this way: if you're a Smashing Pumpkins fan but you refuse to buy CDs at mega-retailers, I think the gods of karma would turn the other cheek if you somehow ended up with a couple of those bonus tracks on your hard drive.
