With new bassist Nicole Fiorentino in tow, Billy Corgan and his latest incarnation of Smashing Pumpkins--which also includes guitarist Jeff Schroeder and drummer Mike Byrne--are hitting the road for a 14-show run of intimate venues that begins July 6 in Cleveland and wraps up July 24 in Memphis.
This marks the first Pumpkins tour since December 2008 and Corgan promises "a balance of classics, a few obscure ones, and new Teargarden material." With Teargarden, of course, he's referring to the whimsically titled 44-song work Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, which is not only being released online for free, bit by bit at Smashingpumpkins.com, but is being specially packaged into 11 EP's to be sold in record stores. Last week, SP released the first of these EP's with Teargarden by Kaleidyscope Vol. 1: Songs for a Sailorthrough Martha’s Music/Rocket Science Ventures.
As for the tour, Corgan is letting a lucky few bask in his glory by inviting select fans to attend Smashing Pumpkins sound checks (details TBA). In a statement, he says, "We are going to do something unique, which is play an invite-only set during sound check of almost all new, unreleased songs. We're still figuring out a way to make it possible for some of the fans who'll be in the line outside waiting to get in for that.” While they figure shit out, you can keep checking back to SP's official site for updates and ticket info.
