Singing dentist prevented from performing Prince song

“Without Purple Rain I wouldn’t be where I am today.” No, these aren’t the words of diminutive rocker Prince. The quote is from former dentist Andrew Bain, a British singer who struck gold with a series of operatic versions of popular songs. Bain signed a lucrative deal with SonyBMG after extracting teeth and filling cavities proved less fulfilling than flexing his vocal chords for a living.

But the onetime oral surgeon has raised the ire of the over-sexed Minnesotan, who has slapped an injunction on Bain’s unusual version of “Purple Rain.” The notoriously overprotective Prince, who is the scourge of YouTube users (even when they’re uploading songs that his purpleness doesn’t own the rights to), has asked Bain to stop performing the song. Bain will continue to deliver songs by artists such as David Bowie and Bryan Adams, and SonyBMG are clearly expecting big things after handing him a cool £1million recording contract. [NME]
