Innovation is always welcome, especially in the often blog-oversaturated and bandwagon-hopping world of electronic music. So the announcement this week that dance-floor rulers Simian Mobile Disco will be not only releasing a series of 12-inch singles on a new imprint, Delicacies, but will also be pairing each release with a club night entitled Delicatessen (personally curated by SMD’s James Ford and Jas Shaw) comes as a refreshing palate cleanser.
According to the duo, each track “will take the name of an exotic, and often bizarre, delicacy from around the world.” The first Delicatessen opened its doors at London’s Matter on Feb. 20 and featured (in addition to SMD’s now-famous live show) sets by Green Velvet, Boy 8-Bit, DJ Pierre, Retrograde, Joker, Ralph Lawson, and Mowgli. The next, also at Matter, is scheduled for July 23. (Lineup to be announced.)
For an appetizer of the aural treats, listen to excerpts from the first two singles, “Aspic” and “Nerve Salad,” to be released in late April.
