Sigur Ros have a really interesting blog post up at their site today discussing what it's like to get their music ripped off for a bevy of ads. See, according to Sigur Ros, they are approached all the time to get their music placed in commercials--which they always, always decline--and then months after being approached, they see their songs bastardized and in commercials anyway under slightly different compositions. Head to their site to read it. They've included videos of ads to see what they're talking about. The one above here is obviously a rip of "Olsen Olsen." The band isn't definitively claiming they're being ripped off, because they're afraid of being sued, but it's impossible to claim that one above isn't at least HEAVILY influenced by Sigur Ros.
There have been a few different artists who have complained about this, haven't there? I seem to remember a suit coming up last year or the year before for whatever reason. It does not surprise me at all that TV commercial producers do this, though it feels like there should be some stronger way for artist's to be protected against it.
This happens all the time, and not just with commercials. The number of times I've been watching a TV show and heard an obvious corruption of a song is pretty endless. It sucks because it's almost -- almost -- the same as if musicians have no voice in how their music is used. Just maddening, overall.
Tom Waits has successfully sued several times for stuff like this I'm pretty sure.
One of the reasons Moby licensed all the songs to 'Play,' so he says, was because this kind of stuff was going to happen anyway, so he might as well take the money and donate it to charity.
But I think the most insulting part of that commercial had to be the fact they're saying a car will stop you from committing suicide. Rofl.
