In January Control the upcoming Joy Division biopic was announced to be more than just a rumor. The movie is based on Deborah Curtis book Touching from a Distance and has been helmed from the start by director Anton Corbijn, who is mostly know for his video work with U2 and Depeche Mode. New Order has also been a part of the project from the beginning, at Corhijns behest, and will be providing the soundtrack to the movie.
We were asked to do the soundtrack to the film, Peter Hook told NME, which I thought was a fucking great idea for Joy Division to do the music for a Joy Division film because weve never really done a soundtrack before. The soundtrack could include some new stuff.
Newcomer Sam Riley has filled Ian Curtis role, German actress Alexandra Maria Laura shall play Curtis lover Annik Honore, and Samantha Morton has been cast as Curtis widow Deborah.
Shooting began on the project on last week and Control is slated for a 2007 release through Momentum Pictures and Becker Films. There is even an official website [http://www.controlthemovie.com] where you can submit your email and be kept up to date on the progress of the picture.
While rumors about a possible Ian Curtis movie have been circulating for years, his remaining family and bandmates have never been thoroughly impressed with the proposals they had received. Corbijns idea has been obviously welcomed by Deborah Curtis and New Order, which has given many, including myself, hope about the eventual outcome.
For Hook: Every time we get accolades for Joy Division it makes [Ians suicide] sadder, especially with the film. Working on the film has made the whole thing seem more poignant.
