Horror movies can be difficult to pull off. Something that might seem creepy at first can turn into camp and goofiness. Just ask whoever currently holds the rights to Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street.
Even engaging plots or novel camera tricks can work for a while. But if you don't use them properly, they're going to become pop-culture punch lines pretty quickly -- as the creators of The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity quickly found out.
So the buzz surrounding the horror picture Sinister may be a bit hard to believe. What's more, the premise doesn't sound that remarkable. Ethan Hawke stars as a man who finds a box of old film in his attic, along with a projector. The things he sees (and the figure lurking in the background of all the shots) start to bleed into reality. Or is he losing his mind?
The movie was recently screened at SXSW, and it's getting rave reviews. Just watch the trailer, or see any of the new clips now being shown on IndieWire. Just make sure you're not alone in the house and all the lights are on.
